Review:

From the opening minutes, the audience is entirely enthralled by this tale of the Holocaust. The story follows Bruno (Butterfield) a young German boy during World War2, whose father is made Commandant of one of the ldquo;work campsrdquo;. Bruno soon meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy imprisoned at the camp, and the should-be enemies flourish into best friends.

As the story progresses we get an in-depth view into Nazi life during the war, from David Thewlisrsquo; unfaultable portrayal of the officer ldquo;doing his duty for the fatherlandrdquo;, to his onscreen mother voicing her opinions on the Fuhrer and immediately being warned to hold her tongue.

The true stars of this film though really are the children. You truly feel Brunorsquo;s innocence as he asks his mother ldquo;Therersquo;s a farm over there, can I go play with the children?rdquo;, and you honestly believe that Shmuel has suffered during his stay in the camp. Amber Beattie also does an excellent job as Brunorsquo;s sister Gretel, showing the orthodox German girl of the time, devouring the ideology, being swept up in the Hitler Myth

As the film reaches its terrible climax, the audience is silent, but for the sound of one girl sobbing. The credits roll and not one person moves a muscle. That is the power of this movie. It is an entirely cathartic experience, draining emotion from the audience, leaving them totally spent by the end. Although this film is rated 12A by the BBC I would seriously recommend parents do not take their children if they are below 10, and not at all if they are easily offended, as the climactic sequence is EXTREMELY intense.

This film is an absolute must see, whether you have a particular interest in Nazi history or not ndash; yoursquo;ll be amazed either way.
